Axis Expands at Hoults Yard as Newcastle Team Set to Double

Planning and environmental consultancy Axis has expanded into a larger office at Hoults Yard in Newcastle as it prepares to double its regional team.

The fast-growing consultancy only opened its Newcastle base at Hoults Yard in March 2025, but continued success in the region has already prompted a move into significantly larger workspace within the creative business community.

The expansion reflects Axis’ growing presence in the North East and its ambition to build a stronger team to support the region’s evolving development and infrastructure landscape.

Why Axis Chose to Expand at Hoults Yard

Rather than relocating elsewhere, Axis chose to expand within Hoults Yard, highlighting the value of the community-led workspace environment.

Ben Siddle, Senior Planning Consultant at Axis, said:

“By moving into a much bigger office, we’re future-proofing in preparation for growing our team and growing our business.

Our new office incorporates a meeting space too. We’ve been really happy – and successful – at Hoults Yard so didn’t really explore any other options when looking for bigger offices.

We love the atmosphere, the people and the other businesses are so friendly and there are some great coffee shops.”

Hoults Yard has become home to a growing mix of creative, professional and digital businesses, offering flexible workspace alongside cafés, meeting spaces and collaborative opportunities.

Newcastle Team Set to Double in Size

The Newcastle team, currently led by Technical Director Ian Cansfield, has grown to four people and is set to double as Axis recruits new talent.

The company is currently hiring for several roles including:

  • Associate Director Planner

  • Senior Transport Planner

  • Landscape Architect / Design Lead

  • Additional planning and consultancy specialists

The recruitment drive reflects Axis’ confidence in the North East’s development potential.

Supporting Major Infrastructure Growth in the North East

Ian Cansfield explained that government investment in carbon capture and hydrogen technology is helping accelerate development activity.

He said:

“The development landscape in the North East is evolving quickly, particularly with the allocation of £1.7bn in government funding for carbon capture and low-carbon hydrogen projects.

This funding supports the industrial cluster decarbonisation programme for the East Coast Cluster around Teesside, alongside the HyNet project in the North West.”

This transition toward low-carbon infrastructure and industrial decarbonisation is driving demand for specialist planning and environmental expertise.

Axis is already supporting projects across both the North East and North West, helping deliver sustainable development aligned with national net-zero ambitions.

Transport Planning Expertise Supporting Regional Growth

Associate Director Gareth Wakenshaw, a transport planning specialist, emphasised the importance of integrated planning for future development.

He said:

“With significant housing and infrastructure growth planned across the North East, transport planning plays a critical role in turning ambition into deliverable development.

From establishing robust access strategies at the outset to undertaking detailed junction capacity assessments and managing off-site impacts, early strategic input is essential to ensure schemes are viable and policy-compliant.”

He added that Axis’ approach combines technical planning expertise with sustainable transport strategies to ensure developments align with net-zero targets.

Hoults Yard Welcomes Axis Expansion

Laura Goldston, General Manager at Hoults Yard, welcomed the company’s growth within the community.

She said:

“We’re delighted that Axis have expanded their workspace here at Hoults Yard – they’re clearly an ambitious and successful company and they’re also great to work with.”

The expansion highlights the continued growth of Hoults Yard as a hub for ambitious businesses in Newcastle.
